SEA: Supporting Emotional Awareness among Goan Seafarers
Grant Awardee: Godwin Fernandes
India is a major supplier of seafarers globally, with Goa contributing a disproportionately high share. Seafarers face unique psychological challenges, including prolonged isolation, fatigue, stress, and limited access to mental health support. This project aims to deve lop and disseminate a practical self-help booklet to strengthen coping strategies and peer support among Goan seafarers. The project will use a desk review, online survey, and interactions with returning seafarers to understand their mental health concerns and assess existing support systems. The initiative seeks to build evidence, raise awareness, encourage integration of mental health support within the seafaring ecosystem, and improve wellbeing while reducing the burden of mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and substance use.
