Overview

In recent years, there has been a growing focus on fostering trans-affirmative medical education, spurred by legislative acts like the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, and key legal rulings in Madras and Kerala High Courts. The National Medical Commission has also emphasized the importance of this initiative. However, the transition towards trans-affirmative medical education requires a clear roadmap, particularly under the competency-based medical education (CBME) framework. The TransCare MedEd project addresses these needs by developing competencies for trans-affirmative health provision. This national conference aimed to unveil draft competencies, facilitate discussions, and share best practices, advancing the cause effectively.

Rationale

The Transcare Med-Ed project responded to the urgent need for inclusive healthcare practices by addressing the intersection of shared decision-making and trans-affirmative healthcare in India.

By highlighting global best practices, it offered valuable insights into effective strategies for vulnerable communities. Through this national conference, the project aimed to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among healthcare professionals. By creating a set of core competencies specifically tailored to the Indian context, it sought to equip healthcare providers with the necessary skills to provide respectful, informed, and inclusive care to transgender individuals, ultimately improving healthcare outcomes and promoting equity in access to healthcare services.

Progress till date

The Transcare Med-Ed conference was successfully organized on May 5th and 6th in Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi. The conference was attended by over 100 individuals across two days.
