Description of the project

START (Screening Tools for Autism Risk using Technology) is developing a digital application, to screen for neurodevelopmental disorders like autism in household settings. This project is being supported by the MRC UK, Global Challenges Research Fund and is a collaboration between Reading University, UK; Nottingham Trent University, UK; Birkbeck College; Harvard University; AIIMS; Public Health Foundation of India and Sangath.

The START app includes different tasks to assess eye gaze using webcam-based eye tracking, motor parameters, social preference and sensory seeking behaviors along with questionnaires and video recording of parent-child interaction.

START has been designed with features of games to make it appealing to young children, and a key feature is that it has the potential to be delivered by minimally trained health workers, in a community setting. The validity, acceptability, and feasibility of this app are being tested in 2-5-year-olds with autism, intellectual disability and typically developing children in Delhi NCR.
