INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT OF COGNITIVE HEALTH (REACH)

PROJECT OVERVIEW

One of the key challenges in the field of early childhood development is the lack of specialists who can assess child development in the crucial preschool years. Through REACH, Sangath has developed a toolkit which has the potential to measure cognition in preschool children at scale.

LOCATION

Delhi, New Delhi

PROJECT DURATION

May 2017-April 2021

PROJECT GOAL

  • To develop a toolkit comprising electroencephalography (EEG) and tablet-based games to measure cognitive development in preschool childrenĀ
  • To assess the feasibility of the toolkit for delivery by non-specialists in rural householdsĀ
  • To validate the toolkit against gold-standard clinical developmental assessmentsĀ
  • To follow up a cohort of children through the preschool years and monitor their growth and developmentĀ

KEY IMPACT

Process employed:

  • Participatory approach to iteratively develop the DEEP tool through formative work with children and families from the communityĀ
  • Qualitative work to evaluate the acceptability of the DEEP tool
  • Quantitative work to evaluate the feasibility and validity of the DEEP tool and EEG

Outputs:

  • A Developmental Assessment on an E-platform (DEEP) comprising of tablet based gamified neuropsychological tasks to measure cognition in preschool children comprising 14 games woven into a narrativeĀ
  • Evidence of the acceptability, feasibility and utility of the DEEP tool
  • Exploration of the acceptability, feasibility and utility of EEG to measure neurophysiological signatures of cognition in preschool children

Impact:

In order to address a key obstacle in ensuring that children attain their optimal developmental potential, a DEvelopmental assessment on an E-Platform (DEEP) has been created comprising distinct games woven into a narrative. Results show high levels of its acceptability and validity against gold standard cognitive assessments. Such a tool has the potential to be administered at scale and aid in the identification of children who are impaired in their cognitive development thereby facilitating their timely referral to appropriate interventions.
