VISHRAM – a community-based mental health programme for depression in Vidarbha

VISHRAM was a community-based mental health programme with the goal of addressing the mental health risk factors for suicide in people from 30 villages in the Amravati district in Vidarbha, central India. Our aim was to assess whether implementation of VISHRAM was associated with an increase in the proportion of people with depression who sought treatment.

We found out that a grass-roots community-based programme in rural India, specifically villages in Vidarbha in this case, was associated with a substantial increase in equitable contact coverage for depression and improved mental health literacy.
